2019 Summer Classes & Workshops

Please note that all classes are designed for adults, anyone interested in signing up under 18 years of age needs to get prior approval.

Drop-In Night

We have a new Drop-In Night for Northwest Encausatic Alum. If you have taken classes at Northwest Encaustic in the past and would like time to work on projects you can drop in at the studio on the 3rd and 4th Thursday of the month starting in February. From 6-10 PM we will offer an open studio for $45.00 per night, per student. We will provide the space, paint, and tools and students will bring their own panels to paint on. We will not be offering instruction during these time, just studio time. Large panels or large bodies of work will need to be negotiated with management prior to open studio night.

Beginning Encaustic

This 2 day encaustic class is suitable for students new to this exciting medium. You will be introduced to the basics of encaustic painting with demonstrations of traditional and contemporary techniques. You will explore stenciling, collage, solvent transfers, working with glue and shellac. A brief history of the medium as well as basic instruction on safety. Bring your sense of adventure and go home with some art.

Fine Line and Detail with Encaustics

In this 2 day encaustic class you will learn to create complex detailed surfaces using a quill style encaustic pen in conjunction with more traditional encaustic painting. Exploring variable surfaces, exploiting opaque encaustic over translucent. Learning techniques that create fine line, as well as blending and texture. You will learn how to use collaged elements to separate layers, making specific areas the forefront. This is a steady, deliberate technique…instructor will use first day to demonstrate, and students will have a chance to do samples, experiment and get comfortable with the pens. Most of the second day will be used to complete a piece, with guidance for technical challenges.

Collage and Assemblage

In this workshop, students are introduced to the materials, tools, and technologies used in collage and assemblage. Creating new meanings by recombining old objects. Exploring collage, drawing, altering photos, painting, altered found objects, storytelling and composition. Special attention to the mechanics of attaching disparate materials. Encaustic will be a small part of the process explored.

Monotypes in Encaustic

Create one-of-a-kind prints layering with pigmented beeswax and powdered pigments. Exploit the natural translucency that occurs with the saturation of the beeswax into the paper. Explore the drawn line, the painterly mark and the unpredictability of the printmaking process. Develop techniques working with heat and the relationship to surface and texture. Make a series of related prints in this two-day workshop. This process does not require a press.

Painting Images with Encaustic

This class will cover basic encaustic painting technique for the encaustic and non-encaustic artist who wants to paint images with the ancient medium of encaustic. Willow Bader has perfected the technique of painting, scraping and using the torch to make representational images with encaustic and she will share her method in this class. Class topics include: using a heated pallet, mixing colors with encaustic medium, application of paint, supports and grounds, using drawing materials with encaustic paint and scraping and fusing with a torch. Painting and drawing experience recommended.

NWE Cancellation & Refund Policy

Withdrawals and refunds – If Northwest encaustic cancels a class students will receive a full refund. Students who withdraw two weeks or more prior to the first day of class will receive a full refund minus a $15.00 drop fee and a $10.00 processing fee. Students who withdraw fewer than two weeks prior to a class will not receive a refund.

Missed Classes – There are no discounts or refunds for missed classes.

Drop Fee – A $15.00 fee is applied to each class that is dropped after registration. This fee does not apply to students who add a class within the same quarter.

Class Cancellation – All classes not meeting the minimum enrollment one week prior to the start date may be cancelled. Northwest Encaustic will contact students in affected class and offer refunds or placement in an additional class.
